Vortex Data Systems and Microsoft Offer Third
Annual Youth Scholarship
April 9, 1999, San Diego, CA — Vortex Data Systems and
Microsoft are teaming up for a third time to offer the Best and Brightest
III youth scholarships. The program is conducted at the Vortex educational
center in San Diego and is open to junior and senior high school students
who have a recommendation from a school administrator or teacher. Classes,
exam preparation, exams, and graduation and career day are scheduled to take
place during the summer break from June 21 to July 24. The scholarship is
valued at $4,000 per student.
To be considered for the scholarship, students must meet some basic
qualifications including: be a junior or senior in high school as of May 1,
1999; possess an aptitude for computer technology, excellence in technical
and academic studies, solid work ethic, and exemplary moral character; show
a commitment to excellence, personal growth, personal responsibility, and
self-determination; and posses the personal appearance, demeanor, and
self-confidence of a business professional.
"The Best and Brightest program presents a unique opportunity for
motivated San Diego high school students to get a head start in their
computer and technology careers," commented Steve Gardner, Partner
Representative at Microsoft. "This is one of the best programs for high
school students to truly set themselves above the rest of their peers in a
very competitive field."
The application process consists of the following: submit an application
package including a student essay, faculty and other professional letters of
reference, and parental consent form; pass a written test; and complete an
interview with Vortex staff. Deadline to submit the application package is
May 14, 1999 at 5:00 p.m. Candidates will be evaluated on overall skill and
motivation level and current knowledge of computers. Complete details and

"Due to growing interest, we are increasing the number of students
to be accepted into the program from 12 in previous years to 20 this
year," stated Paul Christiansen, President and CEO of Vortex. "It
is exciting to be able to grow the program and prepare San Diego’s
talented students for their future goals."
Selected students will earn a Microsoft Certified Product Specialist (MCPS)
certification, which is the initial step toward becoming a Microsoft
Certified Systems engineer (MCSE), a coveted designation in the computer
engineering field. The program includes two weeks of intensive Microsoft
classes on networking essentials, administering Windows NT 4.0 and
supporting Windows NT 4.0, exam preparation, and two exams.
